Academic Programme

In the Early Years section of Central Emirates International Academy Abuja, we combine the best of the British Early Years Foundation, and the Nigerian Early Childhood Care and Education, to achieve an integrated curriculum that serves the needs of our pupils. Aspects of the Nigerian culture are also infused with their learning through: language, music, drama, song, dance and art, to lay the foundation for a sense of national identity.

Our aims are the holistic development of a child; as well as provide the requisite springboard for a successful transition to primary school.

To achieve these aims, we work on a one on one basis with our pupils, and in partnership with their parents/guardians to ensure that they attain their Prime and Specific Early Learning Goals, in the seven areas of learning of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum:

  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Problem solving, Reasoning & Numeracy
  • Physical Development
  • Creative development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Understanding the World

Pupils’ learning is focused on a variety of games, activities, and guided researches that helps them relate class room scenarios to real life situations. This of course is further enhanced with the active support and partnership of their parents.

Pupils’ progress is also monitored through a variety of processes. We maintain charts and folders, documenting each child’s progress. These records provide a visual record detailing each child’s learning targets, and their achievements so far.

STAFFING

Each class is led and managed by graduate teachers who have received specialist training in delivering the Early Years Curriculum. Class teachers are supported by an assistant teacher, and class attendant. Our ratio of teacher to pupil per class is 1:5 (one teacher to five pupils).

Our pupils also enjoy the services of specialist French, Sports and kids STEM teachers. Our teaching staff are mixed gender; in recognition of the role the different/ each genders plays in a child’s cognitive development. Our teachers are friendly, but firm and they make appropriate role models to guide and motivate our pupils to be successful learners.

Admission/Grading System

Admission into Crèche, is ongoing throughout the year. For admission into other classes, children are assessed to determine their needs prior to them starting school. Our classes are age specific, and we adhere strictly to the age requirements. Pupils for each class must have reached the stipulated class age by September of the year of their admission.

Early Years admission age-range:

  • Crèche – 0-14 months
  • Playgroup– 14 months by September
  • Pre-nursery– 2 years by September
  • Nursery – 3 years by September
  • Reception– 4 years by September

Class rooms

Our classrooms are spacious with sufficient room for play-based learning and activities, so our pupils can develop requisite skills for independent learning. Our curricular and co-curricular activities are delivered in a learner-friendly environment both indoors and outdoors.

Playtime

At playtime, our pupils get the opportunity daily to exercise their muscles , and develop their motor skills. Daily playtime takes place in our well laid out and safe play area, with artificial turf that guarantees safety, especially for children allergic to natural grass.

Excursions

We organize regular excursions for our pupils to expand their learning and understanding beyond the classroom.

Designated excursions – internal or external – are an added advantage for our pupils as they provide opportunities to consolidate lessons taught in classrooms, as well as exposes them to practical aspects of learning aside from the theoretical.

Some excursions trips engaged in by our pupils this session include:

  • Millennium Park
  • Silver Bird Cinemas
  • Central Bank of Nigeria

After school activities:

Our after school activities encompass academic and social clubs.  Club activities are held on Fridays from 1.30p.m. to 2.30p.m.- for pupils whose parents want them to further develop specialized skills in a range of vocations.
